The history of Germany is reflected in its culture, museums, churches, palaces and many architectural highlights being world heritages. We can not forget to talk about Germany’s food and drink; each region has its own specialties accompanied by the most famous beers and wines.

Castles
Germany is filled with all kinds and styles of castles and palaces each one with a long history through its halls and chambers. Some of them are private residences; others have been changed into hotels, restaurants or museums. You can visit them easily, by car, on public transport or on foot. The most famous castles are Neuschwanstein Castle (Bavaria), Sanssouci Palace (Berlin), Wartburg Castle (Thuringia), Heidelberg Castle (Palatine Land) and Lichtenstein Castle (Swabian Alb).



Black Forest
The Black Forest is located in the south-west and it is one of the most popular destinations in Germany. It is a beautiful area of mountains, waterfalls and forests where visitors can do many activities like hiking, skiing and other sports, there is something for everyone. The Black Forest is also home to the cuckoo clock and the yummy Back Forest Cake.


Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate was known as a symbol for the division of the city, and now it is symbol for freedom and reunification of Germany. The gate is similar to the Propylaeum of the Acropolis in Athens and in its top there is a statue of the Goddess of Victory. Nowadays, the Brandenburg Gate is closed to traffic.



Cologne Cathedral
The Cologne Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Germany and the second tallest Gothic architecture in the world. Its construction began in 1248 but due to various stops in building, it was finished six hundred years after. The Sarcophagus of the Magi and the Gero Cross are among the main attractions of the cathedral.

Temperature


Germany’s climate is varied, drastic changes or extreme temperatures are rare. Average temperature in the coldest month of the year, January, range from 1.5ºC to 6ºC. On the other hand, in July, the warmest month, temperature could vary from 18ºC and 20ºC. Rain occurs any time of the year and snow covers the higher mountains from January to March.

Regions in the coast of Germany have a temperate climate, warm summers and soft cloudy winters; in the Alps the climate is cooler and more rain. An especial region is the Harz Mountains; there exists a microclimate with cold winds, warm summers and snow in winter.

Culture


Germany has an amazing cultural life with fascinating museums, architectural places, great musical ambience, beer and wine festivals and many other things that make the country a popular destination in the world.
In literature, Germany is one of the world’s leading book nations. The country has notable authors like Walther von der Vogelweide, Wolfram von Eschebbach, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm among others. Other important part of literature is poetry; Germany’s most important poets are Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Kleist, Hoffman, Brecht and Schmidt.

Music has an especial place in the cultural life, in Germany many geniuses of classical music were born like Beethoven and Bach. Other important musicians include Handel, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Wagner and Strauss. Currently, Germany’s music scene is represented by night jazz clubs, lounges, pop/rock events and many prestigious annual music festivals from the Alps in the south to the North Sea and Baltic coast.


Sport is another key part of cultural life in Germany, a proof of that is the 27 million Germans who are members of sports club. The most popular sport is Football; thousands of spectators attend every weekend to see games of the Bundesliga. Other sports are marksmanship, tennis, handball, volleyball, basketball and ice hockey.

Germany is home of the largest festival worldwide, the “Oktoberfest”. This event is an icon of cultural life and attracts a lot of visitors. It is not only beer tents, the festival has everything for all: festival parades, live brass bands, carousels and other spectacular fairground attractions

There is also a large tradition of cinematography in Germany; films such as Run Lola Run, Das Experiment and Good Bye Lenin have gained international success. The most important festival of film in Germany is the Berlin Film Festival that year after year is becoming in one of the most important festivals.
